If adults had to go to compulsory education classes every ten years or at key life points, what would be the most beneficial things to teach them?
At 84 by far the most important things I have learnt in life areHow to avoid stressHow people make decisionsAvoiding stress to some extent means adopting a life style that may be counter intuitiveIt questions whether 'success' is worth the effort, and even what success actually isThere is the Paul Getty definition of success "Rise early, work hard, strike oil" type of successand those who pursue wealth and power at an emotional cost that is too high to bearLearning how people make decicsions is not the same as how you make decisionsYou will be taught to make decisions, and will learn by  experience, and often costly experiencesIf you know how others make decisions then you will have a fundamental understanding of their view of the worldIn one way, our world is the result of someones decisionsSomeone decides whether we are attractive or notwhether we are clever or notwhether we are trustworthyrich ReliableCapableFailthfulHotCoolSmartStupidFashionableCharmingWittyWorth marryingWorth befriendingWorth robbingWorth killingSomeone decides whatPoliticsReligionCultsTrendsSongsDietsWe should be followingand what ones we shouldn'tOrder in the world comes from someone making decisions and those decisions being followed, otherwise it is chaosMost of the questions on Quora are about decision makingMost of the answers are about how one should make a decisionI have kept a diary for many yearsI write down decisions I have madeA month later I write whether it was a good or bad decisionand the reasons whyWhen I made New Years Resolutions I also listed why I intended to do, or not do that itemWhen I achieved or failed, I listed whyUntil I stopped making resolutionsEvery decision ever made will eventually have unintended consequencesIf we had to learn that as part of our compulsory educationI feel that we would  all benefitWhen I studied martial arts I learned that good generals  avoid fightsGood musicians play the least notesGood artists use the least linesElegance is the elimination of excessIt goes for every aspect of livingCompulsory teaching of thisMight well be usefulI would guess
What are the disadvantages of strict parenting?
I would consider myself eligible to answer this question. My parents are working and I have an elder sister who is 3 years elder to me. I was very good at grasping things fast. But, I was really bad at mugging up things and that's how it started. My dad used to teach me all the subjects except mathematics (As my mom is a mathematics teacher and my dad wasn't very good at it). I literally used to beg my mom to teach me.My dad has hit me with his leather belt, slippers, shoes, stick, steel scale for not being able to remember things. My mom burnt my thigh with a hot steel rod because I lied about something. I wasn't even 10 back then.I've had marks of being beaten up for days, even weeks at times. My sister was beaten up in front of our house by my dad because she went to a friend's house (whom she considered as her brother and my parents knew about it). He used to live just 200m away.We were not allowed to play in the streets until it's a power cut or we are done with our finals and waiting for our results.Once we were playing with the kids who lived in the same street, my dad had asked us to stop playing by 7pm and come back home. My sister went inside around 6:30pm as she was tired. I forgot about the time and I was locked outside as a punishment till 9pm. My mom was worried and checked on me from the window. She wanted to let me in but, my dad warned her not to.My parents were never impressed with my or my sister's academics. Even when we actually did something good, they never appreciated us.And how these things backfired us?We became introvert. We stopped meeting, talking to people and our parents love that.My sister is 25 now and I will be 23 in 2 months. But, we still have to ask everything from our dad. Even if we want to go to the shop nearby to buy bread. My sister earns now. But, my dad has complete power over her bank balance. Even if she has to buy a dress, she has to ask him.We don't share our problems with our dad anymore. Unless we need something financially. We haven't travelled alone ever. My parents got paranoid about me going to New Delhi for the coaching. They tried their best to convince me. But, I wanted to leave for good.My parents have given us every materialistic thing we have asked for. They seek our advice about everything. But, they couldn't give us non-materialistic things like love, care, understanding etc. We feel sometimes that it would've been better if they won't have given us those scars that are going to stay with us forever and hurt a little every time we think of those scars.Love,ShriyaP.S. - I have disabled comments because I was getting hate messages for my parents. I understand that their ways were wrong, they have been abusive but, that doesn't change the fact that they are my parents. They have given me a lot of things that I can't even put in words. I am writing here, on this post, because of them. So, please try to understand that and help other kids if they are going through this. I am past that phase and have a healthy relationship with my parents now.Thank you!
Why don't schools teach children about taxes and bills and things that they will definitely need to know as adults to get by in life?
Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not prmuch of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes. So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?
Why was the Planning Commission of India created and why does the Indian Prime Minister Modi want to scrap it?
I do not  adhere to whether it should be repealed or not. I will let you know both sides, you decide.Planning commission is set up by Nehru by an executive order , to promote growth, welfare and development of the country. It is the only advisory body to the PMO ( prime ministers office ) in the initial days. Later only economic advisory council and national advisory council are created. There are many people who criticized planning commission from its birth. The first finance minister of India John mathai resigned as finance minister saying planning commission is an "super cabinet" and loving female servant of PM. Raiv gandhi called members of planning commission as bunch of jokers. One famous economist after having some prominent position in commission joked , what is there to plan? One can throw away all those remarks, but one significant remark is done by Ajay chibber, a stanford alumns , former assistant secretary  general of United Nations and director general of Independent evaluation office (IEO) said planning commission is a hindrance to India's development. It is better to replace it , then repair such a large body. Let me tell you Independent evaluation office was set up in 2022 as an office attached to Planning commission by decision of the cabinet to evaluate flagship schemes . Independent evaluation office (IEO) also called planning commission as control commission and it exceeded  its authority , particularly in allocation of funds. Which must be done by finance commission. This remarks made everyone to think and introspect.Planning Commission affected both federal structure and cabinet form of governance. It violated  seventh schedule of constitution, which deal with union and state lists. Clearly planning commission has interfered in states domain of social and economic planning. This forced financial centralisation interfered in governance of state goverments. This is the reason John mathai resigned . Let me tell you , Nehru died long ago, but still you can see some of Nehru traits in planning commision .  Deputy chairman of planning commission grants money to states after approving their plan. This made 2 persons angry. They are,1. states who  want to ask for their own money , which center took from them  from planning commission always.2. It made constitutionally created finance commission mockery. This is one incident where executive created body is making fun of  constitutionally created body.Planning commission is an body of centralized planning with socialistic ideology (Nehru trait) which does not go hand in hand with constitutional ideology of decentralization. For a country like India , even a God can not create a centralized plan for all states. For example MGNREA (mahatma gandhi national rural employment act ) is like a boon for some states and in some other states and delta areas,  it created lot of problems than solving. State has no say in it , only  congress has its say in it.Owing to economic reforms ,privatization , globalization.  Every Indian has became indirectly ruled subject of Obama and world bank . Even if state had some stupid governance, super corruption . Still many people are thriving  and society is moving forward owing to globalization. But still planning commission has been in the dreams of 1970 and 80's and creating plans which does not fit. Even china found its planning body as hindrance in some aspects and replaced it with National development and reform commission in 2000's. If we remove planning commission, we face following questions:Planning commission is the only main body with socialistic approach. Planning commission is shielding most of the people who are under marginalized , who are BPL (below poverty line ) , who never heard planning commission or five year plans in their life , all tribals , poor etc . So , removing a planning commission is a matter of great concern to them. It is very bad that in our country , we have more population of such type. Do you have any mechanism under state level or any level to shield them?India will be thriving in economy owing to privatization , natural resources allocation , ppp models etc. One must remember Private person will always exclude many . So , in the long run India will become more rich and more poor. can you empower people with out getting excluded in the growth process?who will make economic agents to work in the compliance with national priorities .Can the new body do it?what is the guarantee that new body will be free from political cronies and unwanted bureaucrats just like now?what is the guarantee that states will manage funds and execute proects for welfare of people with out getting eaten by corrupt politicians in the absence  central mechanism? But let me tell you 3 powerful people enjoyed absolute majority Nehru , Indira and now Modi.Nehru & Indira always imposed nation's supremacy on states. They seemed to like a homogenous nation more. While Modi being a CM of state earlier , values each state's role in nation's progress and respect them, unlike the father and child. Planning commission which supports Nehru's notion of national supremacy and crony socialism will have to die, sooner the better. If a new competent body is formed and can address the questions raised by absence of Planning commission well, India will prosper with all the people, if it fails to answer, still India will prosper at the cost of many people's  lives. Thanks buddy for asking.
Schools follow certain rules that ensures discipline within the institution. How do you think those rules help in maintaining discipline?
The classical definition of discipline(in any organization) means“ The practice of training people to obey rules and behave well”We know that schools have a lot of rules to maintain order and for smooth functioning. For e.g.1. One should come to school inn even 5 minutes late).( time2. Every student should wear uniform.3. One should have clean and tidy uniform.4. One should cut their nails every Sunday.5. One should complete their homework day6. One should keep their everyday notebooks complete7. One should not make noise in class.8. One should not talk in class.I personally don’t agree with)9. One should bring healthy food in tiff. (some schools have this)And there are various other rules in the school, which otherwise not follow may lead one to some type of punishment. Now according to question how this rules discipline within the institutemaintaining helpLets uniform take e.g. for rule no 2 i.e. to wearIf this rule is not followed then following consequences may happen1. Students with good complex in them.inferiority financial will wear very good clothes as compared to those with financially weaker students resulting in background2. Some students may wear clothes which may be inappropriate according to the decorum of the school.3. This may lead to segregation in school with good clothes wearing students on one side and other on one side.So it is necessary that all students wear a uniformAlso class whenever they want and disturb its functioning.in functioning of school otherwise students will come smooth we can take the case of coming to school on time, this helps inA last e.g can be of cutting nails, this is required because first it makes students look well cultured, second it is hygienic and third it avoids serious injuries in case students fight.Hope my answer clears some points…
How do we stop school shootings from happening in the first place? Do we start with the parents or the school?
In his 1999 book SSpawn, Child Psychologist and author Jonathan Kellerman pointed out that school shootings like Columbine HS were carried out by juvenile psychopaths. There are boys and, rarely, girls in the schools where you send your children who enjoy such things as torturing animals as they fantasize about cruel things they’d like to do to other kids as well as adults. Most of them will never take a gun to school, not because it’s wrong but because they don’t want to go to jail. Most will suppress their cruel urges or find some other outlet.I know of a young man…let’s call him “Bob.” “Bob” talked a special needs girl into letting him videotape a sex act, which he promptly shared with all his friends. They shared it with more friends, etc, etc. I won’t go into any further details than to state the consequences he faced were less than a slap-on-the-wrist and months later he was still in school. The girl is not.He recently got a short suspension for telling an assistant principal to “fuck off.” To be clear, “Bob” is not one of my students, but on 2 occasions he’s directed profanity at me. In one case it was because I caught him on the stairs yelling profane insults at students on the P.E. field. He’s instigated numerous fights between other students on campus, and routinely flouts school rules, and done other things that seem deliberately cruel. Most of his cruelty is directed at female teachers . The video link on the word teachers is not about our school but what some female teachers I’ve known have had to put up with. Because of current laws the administrators think their hands are tied. The district is terrified because “Bob’s” parents have a lawyer on speed dial if the school threatens any consequences the parents find too punitive.I’m no psychologist, but it’s pretty obvious that “Bob” falls into the category of what Kellerman called a psychopath. In the education system we tend to label them as ED or “Emotionally Disturbed.” “Bob,” and others like him, enjoy doing cruel things, don’t feel bad about the pain they inflict on others, and they have no fear of adult authority. Maybe at some point “Bob” will bring a gun to school and use it…or maybe he’ll just continue entertaining himself with small acts of defiance and cruelty. Either way, there’s nothing the system can do to preemptively protect the other students from him. The cruel truth is that once a young man like “Bob” gets labelled ED, he becomes almost immune from consequences. Some ED students even get special “breaks” where they get to wander around campus unsupervised when they feel too stressed. Another ED student I know of was using his stress breaks to text his friends so they could do drugs in the restroom. If “Bob” turns out to be the next mass murderer, TV pundits will ask why the school employees missed all the warning signs? I’m telling you now, we didn’t miss them. It’s just that the legislators and bureaucrats made sure the system protected “Bob” from consequences rather than protect other students from “Bob.”“Bob” is the leader of a small group off other boys who emulate his behavior. If you walk to the office, you’re likely to see a small group of “Bobs” hanging out in the halls or on the stairs. You can hear them from a distance. Their conversations are loud and filled with “mother-fucker” and “fucking” and “shit.” Sometimes they wander the halls yelling profanity back and forth at each other. If you ask them why they aren’t in class they’ll tell you they need to “take a piss” or “take a shit.” That’s how they talk to adults. This isn’t just a problem for teachers. It’s a problem for the students in class with “Bob.” He routinely creates so much disruption that the students in the same class don’t get the learning opportunities they’re entitled to. Kid’s like “Bob” don’t tend to be in the AP or IB classes with the sons and daughters of upper-middle-class parents. And because of the disruption the “Bobs” engage in, the children of working class parents fall further behind academically, leading to lost opportunity and greater inequality in the future. To be clear, not all they boys who emulate “Bob” are psychopaths. Many are just high energy young men with a poverty of structure in their lives. They see that the system has broken down and they can get away with misbehaving. If “Bob” can get away with saying to a female teacher that he wants to “talk about fucking” and his parents will make sure he doesn’t get suspended, then they should be able to walk up to the teacher’s desk and say “I want to take a shit,” instead of “may I have a bathroom pass.” Maybe some of them will commit some grand act of violence and cruelty, or maybe they’ll just get by screaming “fuck” in the hallway while I’m trying to teach vocabulary. We just can’t tell. The reason we can’t tell who’s an actual danger to their fellow students, and to staff, is because the system of school discipline has broken down. About 10 percent of the students on campus are responsible for more than 90 percent of disciplinary issues. But those issues are getting bigger. If we had real consequences for misbehavior, most of that 10 percent would shape up. About 1 or 2 percent would continue to act out and we could focus resources on either helping that hard-core 1 percent, or at least separating the most dangerous from the rest of the student body.If we want to stop bloody violence in our schools, we need to make the schools more orderly and more civilized. When we find kids who really can’t behave in a civilized manner, we need to take that seriously, because the consequences are serious.UPDATEA couple days ago the staff received an e-mail, not about “Bob” but about another boy nearly as defiant as “Bob.” This boy ran away from home and is wanted for theft of a firearm. We were warned not to approach him.
What is to be filled out in the discipline column for a metric?
Your specialization, your area of concentration, your major, your expertise in a particular subject.Metric means 10th grade. Your disciple is “General” because you don't have a specialization in school.
